Psyche and Cupid. (Image from Mark Lex Eros)
In Mythology and Folklore, one of the
selections is about Psyche and Cupid. Long story short: Psyche was a
woman who earned the jealousy of Venus, goddess of love and beauty. Even if she was very beautiful, men were
content to look at her but would eventually marry someone else. Venus sent her son Cupid to have her fall in love with the ugliest man on Earth. But when he saw her, it
was like he shot an arrow into his own heart. He married Psyche under one
condition: that she would never see him. But one night, curiosity got the best
of her. She lit an oil lamp, but instead of seeing an ugly monster, she
realized that she was married to the god of love. Some of the hot oil got
spilled on Eros, making him angry. Psyche then underwent various trials until
the gods of Olympus took pity on her and made her the goddess of the soul and
mind.

In Philippine Literature, one of our selections was The Legend of Magat River. Long story short: Magat rescued a beautiful maiden bathing in a river from a giant python. She agrees to marry him under one condition: he is to swear by the goddess Kabunian not to see her even noontime. For a time Magat abide by his promise. But one day, curiosity got the better of him. When he entered his wife’s room, he found a great crocodile. Thinking that the creature had killed his wife, he slew it. To his horror, the crocodile turned out to be his wife. She reproached him for breaking his vow. Distraught for killing his wife, he threw himself in the river, which eventually bore his name.
Lesson: Love and mistrust cannot live
together.
If you cannot trust the person you love,
maybe you don’t really love that person at all.
If you are always suspicious of everything
that one does, maybe you don’t really love that person at all.
If everything one says always comes across
as negative to you, maybe you don’t really trust that person.
When you love someone, you always think
that the person has the best intentions in mind, even if misguided.
“Love…keeps no record of wrongs. It…always
trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.” (I Corinthians 13:5b, 7)
